Nunavut Marine Council Strategic Plan 2026–2031
Established through the Nunavut Agreement, the Nunavut Marine Council (NMC) provides a mechanism for bringing together the shared experience and knowledge of Nunavut’s Institutions of Public Government to address marine issues that extend beyond the mandate of any single organization. As an extension of the integrated resource management system established under the Nunavut Agreement, the NMC advances its work through coordination and cooperation among the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB), the Nunavut Planning Commission (NPC), the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB), and the Nunavut Water Board (NWB).
The Nunavut Marine Council has released its Strategic Plan for the period 2026–2031, which sets out the Council’s vision, mission, priorities, and objectives for the next five years. Rooted in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and Inuit Qaujimaningit, and grounded in the mandate established under section 15.4.1 of the Nunavut Agreement, the Strategic Plan strengthens the NMC’s role as a coordinating and advisory body on marine policy and governance in Nunavut.
The Strategic Plan provides a clear and flexible framework to guide the NMC’s work in a rapidly evolving marine context. It focuses on strengthening collaboration among institutions, supporting informed and coordinated marine governance, and ensuring that Inuit knowledge, community priorities, and well-being remain central to marine decision-making.

The strategic priorities are applied across focus areas that include marine conservation and planning, development and shipping impacts, community priorities and well-being, and food sovereignty.
