On August 1, 2019, Canada surpassed its 10% marine conservation target with the establishment of the Tuvaijuittuq Marine Protected Area (MPA) under the new ministerial authority of the Oceans Act. The Tuvaijuittuq MPA protects 5.55% of Canada’s marine territory, bringing the total of protected Canadian oceans and coasts to nearly 14%.
